Canvas Newsprint Sign~Tutorial

This sign was super fun to make and actually became something totally different than I had planned! I'm very happy with the way it turned out though. It's a very easy project and my 4 year old really enjoyed helping me out. You'll need the following:

11x14 canvas
Newspaper (I used black and white print)
Wording/picture for sign (I used my silhouette and black vinyl)
Mod Podge
Black Acrylic Paint (craft paint)
Foam Brush
Paper Towels

1. Cover your canvas in Mod Podge and adhere the strips of your newspaper. (Apparently I necglected taking a picture of this step, sorry!) Follow over the newspaper with another coat of Mod Podge. You can either overlap the edges or tear the newspaper off, it's up to you. Let this dry overnight.

2. Make a cutout either with your Silhouette, stencil or a die cut. I opted for wording.

3. Positions your cutout on your canvas as you like and adhere it (with Mod Podge if you're adhering cardstock. The adhesive on the vinyl will be sufficient. Let dry until tacky.

3. Mix a quarter size drop of Mod Podge and paint. Add about a tablespoon of water. We are basically creating a wash, which will rest in the creases and imperfections of the canvas. Brush the wash on sloppily with the foam brush. Gently dab any excess or pooling areas with a paper towel.

4. Mix a golfball size drop of Mod Podge with black paint ( I used a quarter size drop of paint). Cover the entire canvas with the mixture. While it's still wet, distress as desired. I used crumpled paper to run accross the canvas. I then rubbed a paper towel over the lettering and immediately around the lettering. This lightened the area and made the wording stand out more. Remember, Mod Podge dries clear, so this mixture will dry translucent. You can add more or less paint depending on the look you are going for.

5. The final step is to paint the edges of the canvas. This gives your new piece of are a finished touch! NOW find a home for it and enjoy!

This would be super fun in some crazy colors! What do you guys think?

By the way if you love Mod Podge as much as I do, be sure to check out the new book, Mod Podge Rocks! by Amy Anderson of Mod Podge Rocks Blog.

    1. Thanks! I wasn't really worried about it at this point because I was originally going to remove the vinyl to reveal the newsprint underneath but I really liked it so I left it instead!

    1. Thanks! Glad you like it! I think my favorite part about it is that the imperfections and crinkles are wanted, no perfectionism in this craft! :) Have a wonderful week!
