Guest Post! Helen Davies of Better Bathrooms ~ DIY Renovation

Replacing an entire suite of bathroom furniture can seem like a daunting and expensive project,
but with a little creativity and DIY spirit, you can give your bathroom a complete renovation and a
heap of extra personality as well. After all, who wants their bathroom, one of the most frequently
used rooms in any home, to look exactly like every other bathroom? No, we want bathrooms with
character and individuality; to be spaces that reflect a little of who we are. So here are a few
ideas to help you renovate your bathroom furniture, to achieve a refreshed and stylish bathroom,
which is as practical as it is brimming with panache.

Bathroom furniture did spend a few years in the wilderness when minimalism was all the rage,
deemed to be far too bulky and intrusive an addition to bathroom decor. That soon ended when
people realised that having approximately zero storage units available meant that every surface
and bit of space would eventually become home to the various cosmetics, toiletries and cleaning
supplies that we all tend to accumulate over time. So, most bathrooms do tend to have some form
of furniture these days, whether it’s a wall-mounted cabinets or a fitted vanity unit to keep your
daily essentials neatly stowed away beneath your basin.

Most bathroom furniture is wooden, and that can be a solid structure, usually crafted from oak or
pine, or a composite material such as plywood or fiber board. There are several ways to personalize
furniture of this type. By taking a light grain sand paper and lightly sanding the doors and edges of
your units, even if they are modern builds, you will be able to create a worn, antique style in no time
at all. Alternatively, there are a huge number of wood stains and varnishes available, and coating
your units in a walnut or teak oil will also age your storage units and create an air of rich, warm
solidity.

For a modern look, painting your cabinets can be an astonishingly effective choice. Again, this may
require some light sanding to prepare the surface, and you will need an appropriate type of paint
(ask at your local hardware store for details). The choice of colour is entirely down to you, but light
pastel shades will provide a bright, airy effect and keep your bathroom feeling fresh and clean. Of
course, remember that you can create patterns and stencilled designs on your units to give them a
little extra vibrant style. If you have young children, then some characters or colours that they will
like can make bath time a more enjoyable experience.

And don’t forget the finishing touches: Pay a visit to your local thrift stores or Good Will, and
you should be able to find some vintage door and drawer handles to give your improved and
personalized bathroom furniture a final flourish, a final touch that will really help to bring them to
life.

All of the above suggestions can be achieved with a few hours of practical effort and very little
outlay, so go on, give it a go, and create your very own bespoke, unique bathrooms cabinets, that
will make your bathroom really feel like your personalized space. And lets us know how it goes!
